not back to full YAAAAAA strength

neesh suggested i might have my brain back now that i'm in awesome postpartum limbo-land. it might be just wishful thinking, but i am still hoping for more brain. sometime.

i don't have much to write about. unless you count babies (mine). but i know that even my warrior-goddess firstborn and her new sister could become tedious to anyone from whose forehead (ahem, to be delicate) they did not spring. so i'm saving my commentary about them for the other place where i blog.

maybe i need a gimick. for inspiration. like a "tip tuesday" (sarah). except i don't know that much stuff.

one of the blogs i stalk has a "things i love" roundup. so this week i'm stealing that idea. this way i don't have to feel bad when i forget to fill out those email questionnaires that i'm supposed to forward to all the people i know. so, here are some things i like this week.

clockwise from top left: (1) snoop-dogg (i don't actually listen to his music or watch his show, but i still like him. so what?); (2) tom waits (forever and always); (3) art by andrew holder (i'm going through a phase); (4) cormac mccarthy's "the road" (excuse my french, but holy crap!)

that is all for today. i'd like to know some of the things you like.

1) I love a good say anything... reference. Well played, sis. Well played.

2) Have you not read The Road 'til now? What did you think? Amazing, right? Stunning. Breathtaking. Words fail, except in that book.

I'm actually excited for the film; the early production stills look so right. I'll be interested to see how John Hillcoat translates the form of the novel to the screen; how he gets the terseness (tercity?), the sparse and halting hints at the deep McCarthy slices coldly and seemingly without effort in the page.

RD: i can't believe i've missed out on The Road until now too. i woosed out on Blood Meridian (despite it's beauteous language) because it kind of made me want to kill myself. but man, i read The Road from start to finish yesterday. could. not. stop.

i am also very interested to see the visual film interpretation. the book is really poetry in prose form. for the film to capture that poetry in a completely other medium will be tough. or maybe not? if done well it's going to be an artform of its own b/c it could never do what the book does the WAY the book does it anyway.

Dad bought me The Road the day it came out. He was visiting here in Penn State and we stopped by the bookstore. He caught me eyeing it and made my day. So many of the really good books in my life have come from him. What gifts!

You may want to take a look at the director's previous film, The Proposition (2005), starring Guy Pearce, Ray Winstone, Olivia Watson, Danny Huston, John Hurt and David Wenham.

It's a harrowing film and one you may not want to watch. But it's the closest thing to a McCarthy film as I can imagine (though he had nothing to do with the project). If you decide not to see it, definitely read Ebert's review.

And I'm with you on filmmakers re-making their works as different things—they are different things! I hate it when a director/producer tries to cram every word and scene of a book into a movie, seemingly oblivious to the fact that a film is not simply a glorified picturebook! Grrrr.

In terms of your other likes: I don't know much (read: anything) about Tom Waits except that he's way too cool for me. Burn me a cd mix, maybe?

Snoop Dogg and I walked the same hood once upon a day. I never met the man, but two elders in my district claim that they tracted into his cousin's or mother's house.

As for Holder, I'd like to have some of what he's smokin' to produce such chill stuff. Word. Maybe he, Snoop and I can hook up when I'm in the southland.

Except if you haven't noticed I haven't been blogging. I'm totally letting people down. :( And really I don't know that much stuff, and now that I have baby brain I can't even put a sentence together correctly.

I don't know anything about any of your interests, but I'm certainly going to find out. Also, to you and RD, I love how your dad finds such treasures---in every genre almost. He can always be counted on to be up to something interesting and new.

The only slightly intelligent thing I can add to this dialogue is that I, too, have read The Road.....on the recommendation of your dad. (And I agree with Nicea that he is always good for things interesting and new) If I say more I will certainly reveal my lack of depth and intellect.

no holding back, natalie! didn't i just admit that i like snoop-dogg?

Ok, ok.....I like pink tights!

Seriously, ......going out on a scary llimb here. I am enamored by anything dealing with the psyche...I love the stuff Malcom Gladwell writes (ie Blink, Tipping Point )Kay Scarpetta from the Patricia Cornwall series my true heroine. I am forever devoted to Cat Stevens despite the fact that he left music entirely and was recently arrested in an airport on terrorist suspicions. Watercolor by almost any artist is the medium that I love the most. You may now roll your eyes or laugh hysterically.

So my husband is currently working on a show staring Snoop. Yes, he has met him. And apparently, he can read a script like nobody's business.

So tell me chillens...be gentle...why could I never get you guys to acknowledge or share in my love of Michael Chabon. I guess I do remember Justin laughing over the phone at the first few pages of "Tomcat In Love". "That's not an engine, it's a turtle!" If Krista ever has a male child she will need to read that part to understand the psyche of prepubescent boys.

Sherry Carpet said...

natalie: i LOVE cat stevens! and i don't find anything laughable about your book faves, either...i just have to admit i don't know them yet. but i have a library card and i'm going to learn!

dad: there you are! and wha?! why do you think i don't love michael chabon? i read "the wonder boys" and thought it was rad. i like the movie too--a lot. i haven't read the amazing adventures of cavalier and clay yet but, um, have you?

michele: WHA?!?!?! douglas has met the snoops? wicked cool. i am jaloux.

I kinda want to read "The Road" now but I'm a little scared because I was reading some of the reviews on Amazon.com and it sounded like one might need to be an English major to really get it. One guy said he had to look up a word every third page or so. You see my dilemma. If I read it and can't understand it then I might feel stupid. But it sounds worth it because it got a "holy crap" rating from you and if you're anything like me, you save that for when you really mean it. What to do...what to do...forget about it and possibly salvage a little self-esteem, or stretch myself and maybe learn a little? Perhaps the real question is...am I at least as smart as Oprah? And what if I'm not? Oh man, this is stressful.

Yea, I met snoop at the read through for episode 101 last week, and then I was on set last night. Mostly, I work with his producing team, who are really great.

i like you, sherry carpet.

Sherry Carpet said...

annie, i love you too. we need to discuss fun reunion activities. i have some idears and think you would too.

douglas, you have a FUN job. just don't tell me if there's anything about snoops that might make me change my mind about him! i met ludacris in central park once. well, didn't "meet" him as much as nearly get trampled to death by his entourage. that's the full extent to which i have interfaced with rap stars.

shawn, you funny girl. i am pretty sure cormac made up at least half of those new words. i was too lazy to dig out my dictionary, so i assigned whatever meaning to them i felt was appropriate. it's like poetry--you feel your way through it.

I didn't know you like Snoop Dog. When Sean and I were discussing people we liked the other day, I mentioned SD and I couldn't explain why. NOW, I'll just tell him that you like him too and that's good enough for me. :o)
